RPG Mythos Narrative Gaming as Modern Mythmaking [Peer-reviewed article]

Cragoe, N. G. (2016). RPG Mythos Narrative Gaming as Modern Mythmaking. Games and Culture, 11(6), 583‑607. http://doi.org/10.1177/1555412015574195

There is an anthropological parallel between mythology/folktale traditions and between live RPGs (tabletop or larp). 5 social functions can be applied to both: a) exaggerated communication of norms, b) providing a sense of solidarity, c) individual empowerment, d) creating a system of collective mastery and ownership, e) entertainment and leisure.
Good overview on myths and folktales but I would have preferred the author focus on detailing these 5 functions.
